Endless plains
Serengeti translates into endless plains in English.
That’s exactly what it is.
A sea of brown dry bushes with one tree that welcomes you every now and then. And in the Serengeti, the animals roam freely in silence. To see animals in their own habitats with such freedom, living without boundaries in silence is almost spiritual. They are nonchalant about the passing jeeps, are not afraid to thread along very close to our doors, and once in a while give away a passing glance. They sometimes also visit our campsites.
The definite highlight of our safari was the cheetah killing a gazelle. All of us ready with our cameras, but when it happened, within less than 15 seconds, our mouths were wide open, we were gasping with curses, and none of us clicked on the camera. The cheetah, at full speed, made the gazelle swerve to the left and then pounced on it. And then it disappeared behind the bushes. It’s engraved in my mind.
The other highlights included:
- watching lionesses eating a buffalo twice.
- A stand off between two lionesses and a herd of buffaloes, where the two lionesses attacked the herd, the buffalos backed away, and then the head of the herd attacked the lionesses and it was the lionesses turn to back away. This went on for an hour.
- The run of the ostrich.
- The very graceful run of the giraffe that looks like it is going in slow motion although it can reach a speed of 35 kms per hour.
- A hippo running.
- An elephant visiting our campsite and drinking from the water tank and seeing zebras in the middle of the night very close to our tents
- Seeing the big 5 of Africa - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.
- Dancing on a table for dinner and making the other campers hate us.
- Halloween with glow sticks and Konyagi and Bob Marley in the middle of the Serengeti with wild buffalos prowling.
